ACORN 2 influence on Western Australia temperature trends

In late 2018 the Australian Bureau of Meteorology provided access to the ACORN 2 daily temperatures (Australian Climate Observations Reference Network - Surface Air Temperatures), which is the bureau's dataset of homogenised or adjusted raw temperatures at 112 Australian weather stations dating back to 1910.

It is assumed that ACORN 2 will replace the ACORN 1 dataset (introduced in 2012) as the historic reference used for comparison of modern temperatures. These are usually presented to the public as temperature anomalies compared to a 1961-90 baseline at each weather station.

There are 25 ACORN stations in Western Australia. This page analyses the daily temperatures at the 13 WA weather stations with a start year of 1910. The other 12 excluded stations have temperature recordings starting in years after 1910, the most recent being Learmonth with a start year of 1975.

Daily temperatures in ACORN 1, ACORN 2 and RAW have been annualised, and below are charts showing the difference between the two datasets when compared to their original raw annual temperatures. This analysis only allows the inclusion of years within which there were no months with less than 15 days of recorded temperatures, as is the ACORN protocol.

Thirteen WA stations begin in 1910 and end in 2017 in ACORN 1, ACORN 2 and RAW. The first charts below show maximum and minimum temperatures trends at these stations with associated data that, although not the same as all 25 ACORN stations across WA, suggest the new ACORN 2 dataset has warmed Western Australia's maximum by 0.22C and minimum by 0.27C during 1910-1963 vs 1964-2017 (first and second halves) when compared to the ACORN 1 homogenisation.

It might be noted that ACORN 1 lists the daily maximum at WA's chilly south coastal town of Albany on 8 February 1933 as 51.2C, making it the hottest day ever recorded in Australia, whereas ACORN 2 adjusts this day down to 49.5C, making it Australia's equal ninth hottest ever day (Albany's raw temperature on 8 February 1933 was 44.8C). The Pilbara town of Marble Bar recorded 48.9C in ACORN 1 on 1 January 1973, but 49.8C in ACORN 2 - making it the equal fourth hottest day ever recorded in Australia, according to the BoM's temperature records, and hotter than the site's claimed all-time record of 49.3C on 27 December 2018 (Marble Bar's raw temperature on 1 January 1973 was 48.8C).

When the bureau presents ACORN 2 as the official record of WA's temperature history, the rate of warming will be significantly greater than since 2012 when calculated by ACORN 1, a homogenisation process that was inaccurate.

Excel files at the bottom of each station chart and summary can be downloaded to compare how the ACORN 2 algorithms influence daily, monthly and annual temperatures at all 13 sites since 1910.

Anecdotal reports indicate that the Meteorological Office may have been in the town in its early years but there are no clear indications of this, either in available documentation or in the data. An automatic weather station was installed on 21 July 1995, in a new screen about 10 m away from the original screen. Manual observations were continued in the original screen as a comparison until 2000 under the station number 003089. Some instruments were relocated in 2007, shortly before the commissioning of a new meteorological office building, but the screen appears to have been moved only slightly if at all.

Observations resumed briefly in the late 1960s and early 1970s but these were not used in ACORN-SAT. The original Meteorological Office site opened in 1944, 11 km west- northwest of the previous site. Maximum and minimum temperatures were archived only from November 1949 onwards. In about 1967, there was a site move of about 650 m west-northwest. The current site is an automatic weather station installed in a new screen about 10 m from the old screen on 25 August 1996. Parallel manual observations continued in the old screen until 2001 under the site number 002071.
